Govt recognises efficiency at Dar Port

DAR ES SALAAM: THE government is pleased by the improving efficiency in handling various cargo at its ports, especially the Dar es Salaam one.

The Dar Port reduced ships’ waiting time at outer anchorage from 30 days to approximately five days, thanks to investments from partners DP World and East Africa Gateway Terminal (EAGT).

The Minister of State in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, Prof Kitila Mkumbo, praised the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) and the Dar Port on Monday for their efforts in enhancing efficiency in handling various cargo during his tour of their facilities.

“I am pleased with the significant improvements in infrastructure and operations at TPA’s ports, especially at the Dar Port, following the arrival of investors. “These improvements have a positive aim, and I believe this investment will be beneficial and further enhance the efficiency of port services in the country, contributing to national revenue,” said Prof Mkumbo.

The Minister visited the port facilities to witness ongoing operational activities in collaboration with the partners and to see how these investments will enhance port services in the country and contribute to national revenue.

He said that his visit to the Port of Dar es Salaam is crucial for preparing the country’s plans for the upcoming financial year and national development initiatives guided by the National Development Vision 2050.

He told the investors operating Terminals 1 and 2 at the Port of Dar es Salaam, DP World and EAGTL, to ensure they fulfill the agreements in their contracts, as the government has high expectations from them and will closely monitor the investments to ensure they continue to bring benefits to the nation.

During the visit, TPA Director General Mr Plasduce Mbossa said that the current efficiency seen at the Port of Dar es Salaam is attributed to significant investments in modern infrastructure and equipment made by the government. The investment managed to reduce ships dwelling time to three or four days from previous seven days, saying that investment in the country’s ports enhances the services.

Meanwhile, Dar Port Acting Director, Mr Abeid Galus said that ship waiting time at outer anchorage decreased from 30 days to just five to seven days, further increasing efficiency in cargo handling at the port.
