Govt provides building materials to 32 families affected by winds in Rukwa

RUKWA: THE government has provided a humanitarian aid in form of building materials to 32 families which have been affected by strong winds in Kalambo District, Rukwa Region.

Speaking during the handover ceremony yesterday, Kalambo District Commissioner (DC) Dr Lazaro Komba said the 32 families were impacted by bad weather patterns when strong winds which swept across Lyowa ward severely damaged their houses, leaving them homeless.

The DC detailed that the donation included 442 pieces of timber, 400 pieces of galvanised steel and 103 kilogrammes of nails.

Reflecting on the strong winds incident, the DC said on September 20, last year about 65 families were rendered homeless after their houses were damaged by strong winds that swept across Lyowa Ward in Matai town in Kalambo District.

“The actual damage caused by strong winds was quantified and it was revealed that 32 family devastated by strong winds urgently needed humanitarian assistance to enable them repair their damaged houses and subsequently have shelters to accommodate them” added the DC.

Giving the breakdown, Dr Komba said that seven victims are residents of Namlangwa village, 12 from Matai B village and 13 victims from Kateka village.
