Govt provide relief items to Moshi flood victims

KILIMANJARO: THE government has handed over numerous relief items to flood victims in Moshi District, Kilimanjaro region following the ongoing rains in various parts of the country.
Speaking during the handover of the items on Thursday, Deputy Minister for Policy, Parliament, and Coordination, Ms Ummy Nderiananga, said that the government is aware of the difficulties facing people following continuous rains that have resulted into floods.
Among other items she handed over include 20 tonnes of corn, 150 mattresses, 300 blankets, 150 buckets, 150 jerry cans, and 300 floor mats.
According to her, the calamity had an impact on 119 households in the eight wards of Moshi District.
In line with that, Ms Nderiananga advised those who spread misleading information on social media platforms to stop doing so immediately because they are spreading fear among the public.
“The district information officers and the regional information officers for the respective region are in charge of informing the public of any news regarding disaster occurrences,” she noted.
“These days, there are many troublemakers who use their social networks to record and disseminate misleading information. Please stop doing this and make sensible use of the networks,” she added
Similarly, in order to avert floods in Saningo Village, Old Moshi Ward, she has also directed the Moshi District Commissioners Office to convene with the District Disaster Management Committee and other experts in order to devise plans for the drainage of the Nanga and Manguvu rivers.
On his part, Moshi Rural MP Prof Patrick Ndakidemi (CCM), expressed gratitude to President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration for their assistance to the families of flood victims in a number of locations, including the mudslides that hit Hanang District in Manyara Region.
Detailing the Moshi floods effects, Prof Ndakidemi said that, in addition to crops and other products, including food in store, being washed away, five people perished in the disaster brought on by heavy rain.
“This assistance will be helpful in providing consolation to the flood victims and their families, and it is a demonstration of the government’s concern for them,” he said.
Hai District Commissioner (DC), Mr Amir Mkalipa, speaking on behalf of the Moshi DC, asked the leadership of the Council to ensure that they distribute the items according to the instructions of the government, and anyone who violates them will not hesitate to take action.
