Govt pledges support for youths in ICT startups

ARUSHA: THE government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting innovation stakeholders, including youths in information technology and startups, by creating a conducive environment through the Tanzania Digital Project to foster growth and international competitiveness.

The assurance was given over the weekend by the Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Mr Jerry Silaa, during a meeting with innovation stakeholders and startups.

Mr Silaa stated that the government aims to empower youths from innovation hubs and startups to achieve their dreams and contribute to society through their creativity.

“President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to create a positive impact by supporting young innovators and providing them with the necessary resources,” he said.

He further noted that the government is in the process of formulating a startup policy to strengthen knowledge, foster innovation and enhance self-confidence among young creatives, paving the way for new innovation-driven companies.

“Our government will establish the Digital Technical Institute (DTI) in Dodoma, which will serve as a hub for youths to develop their innovative ideas, connect with investors, access legal aid and contribute to economic growth,” he added.

Mr Silaa also emphasised that his Ministry is open to young people with creative ideas and is committed to facilitating government permits.

He urged youths to collaborate with the government in addressing challenges to achieve their goals and boost the country’s economy through digital innovations.

Tanzania Startups Association (TSA) Chief Executive Officer, Mr Zahoro Muhaji, said the conference aimed at discussing the best approaches to finalising the country’s startup policy.

“Youths from within and outside Arusha Region have shared their views and highlighted challenges hindering their smooth and rapid growth,” said Mr Muhaji.

On his part, Director General of the ICT Commission, Dr Nkundwe Mwasaga, pointed out that ICT offers vast opportunities and urged youths to capitalise on them for digital innovation.

“The ICTC, through the Ministry of Communications and Technology, has engaged with Arizona College, which offers 100 million worldwide opportunities for individuals to access creative content. This opportunity is available to the youth attending this meeting and all Tanzanians,” he stated.

He further explained that the ICT Commission is responsible for managing innovation initiatives for youths locally and internationally, organising conferences and developing platforms to showcase talent, attract investment and facilitate access to loans for startup growth.
