Govt highlights efforts to promote blue economy

ZANZIBAR: MINISTER for Blue Economy and Fisheries Mr Shaaban Ali Othman, has stated that the ministry is undertaking various initiatives to educate and encourage citizens to recognise opportunities in marine resource utilisation.

He made the statement in response to a question from Mwanakwerekwe Constituency Representative, Ameir Abdalla Ameir, who inquired about the ministry’s efforts to raise awareness and provide guidelines on available marine-based opportunities.

The minister revealed that between 2020 and 2024, a total of 350 awareness programmes on the blue economy and sustainable marine resource use were conducted through meetings, conferences, workshops and media broadcasts.

“The ministry is committed to providing services to all people seeking assistance and our doors are open to anyone needing information on marine sector opportunities,” he said.

Additionally, he explained that the ministry prioritises gender inclusion in its empowerment initiatives.

“For example, 500 seaweed farming boats and their equipment have been provided to women taking part in seaweed farming,” Mr Shaaban noted.

The Minister was responding to a supplementary question from Representative Ms Zaina Abdalla Salum (representing people with disabilities), who inquired about plans to support disabled seaweed farmers.
