Govt fast-tracks road upgrades for AFCON finals in Arusha

ARUSHA: THE Government will fasttrack the construction and upgrading of key roads in Arusha, including a bypass linking Kilimanjaro International Airport with Samia Suluhu Stadium in the Olomoti area, about 17 kilometres outside the city centre, as part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The plans were detailed by Deputy Minister for Works, Godfrey Kasekenya, during a working visit to the region by Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba yesterday.
The infrastructure upgrades are intended to ease traffic congestion, provide alternative routes and ensure smooth movement for fans, officials and teams during the tournament.
Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, backed the plan emphasising the importance of completing the project on time, stressing that it would serve as a critical part of Tanzania’s preparations for the AFCON finals.

“The project is a top priority for the government. We cannot afford delays, especially given the significance of this event for our nation,” said Nchemba.
The planned works include upgrading the main road connecting Tengeru to KIA, as well as constructing a new bypass directly linking the airport to the stadium.
The bypass is expected to reduce congestion and provide a faster, more efficient route, avoiding pressure on existing arterial roads.
“Arusha will be a hub of activity during the tournament, and we want to ensure that both locals and visitors can travel efficiently and safely. This project will not only help us accommodate the expected influx of people but will also create a lasting legacy by improving the city’s infrastructure long after the event has concluded,” said Kasekenya.
To speed up the construction, the government has announced that it will hire three contractors to work on the project, ensuring that progress is made quickly and efficiently.
This move is expected to help streamline the project and avoid any potential setbacks that could arise from delays or limited manpower.

“We are not only focusing on improving the roads but also ensuring that we provide a seamless experience for everyone, from spectators to local businesses. By expanding these road networks, we are ensuring there are multiple ways for people to get to the stadium without causing unnecessary disruption,”
Kasekenya explained. In addition to these key routes, the government will be installing street lighting along the corridors from KIA to the stadium, enhancing security and visibility.
Billboards will also be placed along the routes to inform the public about the upcoming AFCON tournament, creating a festive atmosphere in the lead-up to the event.
