Govt encourages pedalling to ease Stone Town traffic

ZANZIBAR: THE Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced new measures to encourage both visitors and residents of Stone Town to walk or use bicycles as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion and enhance the preservation of the historic town.
Acting Minister Lela Mohamed Mussa made the remarks while responding to a question from Mwanakwerekwe constituency representative, Ms Ameir Abdallah Ameir, who inquired about the ministry’s stance on promoting bicycle use to ease motor vehicle congestion in the area.
She explained that restricting motor vehicles is aimed at reducing congestion and creating more space for pedestrians to move freely and safely.
Experts have also noted that vibrations from heavy vehicles contribute to the weakening of Stone Town’s old buildings, many of which are constructed from coral stone.
“The ministry continues its efforts to preserve Stone Town, including renovating endangered buildings within the area and improving water, telephone and electricity infrastructure for better organisation,” she said.

Lela also mentioned that the ministry’s long-term strategy is to develop Stone Town into a world heritage city operating under a smart city model, which will integrate modern technology while preserving the town’s rich history and cultural significance.
Alongside these initiatives, she highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to encourage citizens to visit historical sites and museums, which has led to a noticeable increase in local interest.
She revealed that there has been a substantial rise in visitors, including students, with approximately 41,216 recorded at museums and historical sites across Zanzibar in the 2023/2024 period.
Visitors from Zanzibar, Mainland Tanzania, Kenya and other East African countries continue to explore these sites, particularly during holiday seasons, further emphasising the importance of cultural heritage and tourism in the region.
