Govt allocates 3bn/- for KCMC radiation services
THE management of the KCMC Zonal Referral Hospital has expressed its gratitude to the government following the allocation of 3bn/- for the construction of a radiation service building at the health facility.
KCMC Executive Director, Professor Gilliard Masenga said once completed, the crucial department is expected to serve more than 10,000 patients annually.
“We are very grateful to the government for such a gesture, the facility is going to serve many patients, especially those from the regions of the northern zone, who have to travel to Dar es Salaam to get radiation therapy services,” he said.
According to Professor Masenga, the hospital’s cancer department serves around 9,500 patients per year.
Since cancer treatment takes a long time, many patients are unable to afford shouldering the costs of living in Dar es Salaam, which leads to despair in following the treatment,thus continuing to suffer.
The construction of the building, which started in June 2021, is expected to be completed in December this year, adding that until its completion it will cost more than 5bn/-.
“The front building is expected to host Fluoroscopy room, Ct-Simulator room, Control rooms, Dosimetry room, Radiotherapy rooms, Examination rooms, offices and toilet facilities,” he noted.
Professor Masenga, who was briefing Uhuru Torch Race leader Mr Abdalla Shaib Kaim, said that the bunker building with an area of 882 square metres will be providing treatment through radiation and will have four linear accelerators which will be able to serve four patients at a time.
On his part, Mr Kaim commended KCMC’s management as it strives to provide quality services in the region.
