Government reiterates commitment to peace, dignity
DAR ES SALAAM: THE government has reiterated its commitment to protecting and respecting the dignity of Tanzanians, upholding rights and accountability, as well as maintaining peace, stability and national unity.
The commitment was made on Thursday by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliament, Coordination and Persons with Disabilities), Prof Palamagamba Kabudi, while leading the Tanzania delegation during a meeting with the Special Envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary-General and former President of Malawi, Dr Lazarus Chakwera.
The meeting, among other things, discussed how Tanzania has strengthened its efforts to maintain unity, peace and solidarity among its citizens.
The meeting was held at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) following Dr Chakwera’s visit to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, marking the official start of the Special Envoy’s visit to Tanzania.
During the discussions, Prof Kabudi briefed the envoy on ongoing government initiatives being undertaken by the government to strengthen democracy, with emphasis on protecting and respecting the dignity of Tanzanians, upholding rights and accountability and maintaining peace, stability and national unity.
“We shared insights on Tanzania’s history since independence in 1961, the current political and democratic landscape and the steps being taken to ensure continued stability while enabling citizens to actively participate in building an inclusive economy,” said Prof Kabudi.
He described the meeting as productive and constructive, saying that the envoy gained a clear understanding of key national issues, particularly efforts to sustain peace, unity and the well-being of Tanzanians. In addition to meeting the government delegation, Dr Chakwera is expected to engage with various stakeholders.

He has already met with the Registrar of Political Parties, retired Judge Francis Mutungi, as well as representatives from several political parties.
During his visit, Dr Chakwera is also expected to meet with the Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry into the events of October 29, 2025 and the period following the General Election, retired Chief Justice Mohamed Othman Chande, Also, former Prime Minister and First Vice-President of Tanzania, Judge Joseph Warioba, civil society organisations, the Chairperson of the Zanzibar Electoral Commission, Judge George Joseph Kazi, ACT–Wazalendo Chairperson Mr Othman Masoud Othman, Speaker of the National Assembly Mr Mussa Azzan Zungu, Chief Justice of Tanzania, Judge George Mcheche Masaju, Chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission, retired Court of Appeal Judge Jacobs Mwambegele and the SecretaryGeneral of Chama Cha Mapinduzi, Ambassador Dr Asha-Rose Migiro.
The Special Envoy is also expected to meet with the President, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi and former President of Tanzania, Dr Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.A
