Global children find second chances in Saudi hospitals
SAUDI ARABIA: The Saudi Conjoined Twins Separation Program stands as one of the most distinguished humanitarian and medical initiatives offered by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the global community. Over more than three decades, the program has combined advanced medical expertise with deep compassion, saving lives and giving conjoined twins the opportunity to live independent, dignified futures.
It represents a rare fusion of scientific excellence and humanitarian commitment, positioning Saudi Arabia as a global leader in one of medicine’s most complex fields.
The program operates under the guidance of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, with direct support and continuous follow-up from His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
This high-level backing reflects the Saudi leadership’s belief that humanitarian responsibility and medical advancement are inseparable. By placing humanity at the heart of public service, the Kingdom has elevated medical diplomacy into a meaningful tool for saving lives and restoring hope.
Administratively, the program is overseen by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, one of Saudi Arabia’s foremost institutions dedicated to international humanitarian assistance. Medically, it is led by Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabeeah, Supervisor General of the Center and Head of the Medical Team for Conjoined Twins Separation. Under his leadership, the program has developed a structured and rigorous framework that integrates medical precision, ethical responsibility, and psychological care for patients and their families.
The Saudi Conjoined Twins Separation Program was officially launched in 1990, at a time when separation surgeries were among the most complex and least attempted medical procedures in the world. The program was founded on a clear humanitarian vision: to save the lives of conjoined twins and offer them the chance to grow, develop, and live independently.
This vision emerged at a time when many families had limited or no access to specialized care, often facing insurmountable financial and medical barriers. Over the years, the program has steadily evolved into an internationally recognized reference point in the field of conjoined twin surgery. Its success rests on
meticulous scientific planning, continuous learning, and the accumulation of rare expertise.
Highly trained multidisciplinary medical teams are capable of managing the most delicate and prolonged surgical challenges, often involving operations that last many hours and require exceptional coordination across specialties.

Throughout its more than thirty-year journey, the program has reviewed over 150 cases of conjoined twins from across the world. From these evaluations, more than 60 separation surgeries have been successfully performed. These numbers place the Saudi program among the highest globally in terms of both volume and success
rates.
This achievement is particularly remarkable given the extraordinary complexity of these procedures, which often involve shared organs, intricate vascular systems, and significant post-operative risks.
A defining feature of the program is its comprehensive humanitarian approach. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia assumes full financial responsibility for all aspects of treatment. This includes medical examinations, surgical procedures, hospital stays, medications, rehabilitation services, and long-term follow-up care.
In addition, accommodation, healthcare services, and living expenses for accompanying family members are fully covered. The cost of a single operation often reaches hundreds of thousands of Saudi riyals and can exceed one million riyals depending on the complexity of the case. Despite these costs, families are
never asked to bear any financial burden.
This approach sends a powerful message: access to life-saving medical care should not be determined by wealth or nationality. The Kingdom’s willingness to shoulder these expenses underscores its unwavering commitment to humanitarian values and global solidarity, transforming compassion into concrete action.
At the core of the program’s success lies Saudi human capital. Skilled surgeons, physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, and technicians work side by side with psychological and social support teams to ensure holistic care. These professionals operate in seamless coordination, demonstrating a level of expertise that competes
with the world’s most advanced medical institutions.
Their work exemplifies national excellence and reflects years of investment in medical education, training, and research.
Beyond its medical achievements, the program has touched lives across continents, transcending borders, cultures, and beliefs. Among the countries that have benefited, Tanzania stands out as the nation with the highest number of cases received by the program.
Saudi Arabia has successfully performed separation surgeries for twins Hassan and Hussein from Tanzania’s Tabora region, as well as Anisha and Alicia from Bukoba region. Currently, the program is also receiving
two additional Tanzanian cases: twins Loveness and Lightness, and twins Nancy and Nice.
With four cases in total, Tanzania represents the largest number of conjoined twin cases referred from a single country. These cases reflect not only the program’s medical capacity but also the trust placed in Saudi Arabia by families and governments seeking hope for children facing extraordinary medical challenges.
Each case carries a deeply human story of parents confronting fear and uncertainty, of children born with shared bodies and limited prospects, and of families searching for a chance at life beyond medical impossibility. The program’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that humanity comes first. It does not consider nationality, race, religion, or geography. Instead, it focuses solely on the suffering of a child in need and a family seeking hope.
Through its actions, the Saudi Conjoined Twins Separation Program affirms that the right to healthcare is universal. Every child deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and the possibility of a future shaped by choice rather than circumstance. The program’s work consistently reinforces this principle by turning compassion into life-saving outcomes. In a world often marked by division and inequality, the Saudi Conjoined Twins Separation Program stands as a powerful example of how advanced medicine can serve humanity.
It reflects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s humanitarian values, where science is guided by ethics and compassion. By offering some of the world’s most complex medical interventions without cost or condition, Saudi Arabia
delivers a clear and enduring message: medicine is not merely a profession, it is a mission and humanity must always come first.
