GGML partners with OSHA to promote safe mining in Geita

GEITA: GEITA Gold Mining Limited (GGML) has partnered with the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) to improve safety for small-scale women miners in Geita Region.

The programme begins with educating miners on safe mining practices and distributing protective equipment valued at 24m/- to the Geita Women Miners Association (GEWOMA).

GGML’s Senior Sustainability Manager, Mr Gilbert Mworia explained recently that the programme started with workplace safety training, in collaboration with OSHA and the Mining Office.

“As a company, it is our responsibility to support small-scale miners, since our operations are surrounded by them. We have provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to all GEWOMA members, distributing PPE to 50 individuals to help them engage in safer mining activities,” said Mworia.

GGML’s Senior Manager for Health, Safety, Environment and Training, Dr Kiva Mvungi noted the importance of caution in small-scale mining areas due to the large number of people involved.

He said that the training aimed at protecting women from health risks, such as tuberculosis (TB), which can result from unsafe working environment and practices.

OSHA’s Senior Inspector, Ms Amina Nangu, acknowledged the high risks in the mining sector, noting that improper adherence to health and safety regulations can cause severe harm.
