GGML and Rafiki Surgical Mission donate two Ambulances to Geita district council

In the bid to strengthen good relations with the Government and the surrounding communities, Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) and Rafiki Surgical Mission from Australia have donated two ambulances to Geita district council in Geita Region.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at Nzera area in Geita, the GGML Managing Director Terry Strong said in collaboration with the Rafiki Surgical mission decided to donate the two ambulances because they are highly needed in saving lives of many patients at Geita district council in Geita.

“The Geita District Council requested two ambulances from GGML to help the community in that area because some patients had been suffering when referred to Geita Referral Hospital which is far from Nzera and other areas within Geita District council.

“GGML and Rafiki Surgical Mission positively responded to that request because they are good development partners who support health projects over the past 20 years,” he said and added that GGML and Rafiki Surgical Mission have had a strong partnership since 2000 through Cleft Lip and Palate operation and more than 1700 patients have benefited from the Mission.

Mr. Terry further explained that GGML spent over Tsh 5billion to support health infrastructures and supply of medical equipment’s for the past 20years of its operation in Geita.

GGML supported a construction of Geita Referral hospital, Construction, and completion of over 10 health facilities under Geita Town, construction of 4 new Health centres, Upgrade of Kasota health centre and completion of many other health facilities and Supply of medical equipment’s for Katoro & Bukoli health under Geita District Council.

Geita District Commissioner Hon Wilson Shimo, on behalf of the Government acknowledged GGML support in rescuing lives of patients in Geita district council saying the support would play a good role to reduce death rates in his area. He called upon other partners in Geita District Council to work with the Government to curb health challenges in Geita.

“GGML has been a very good partner in supporting different health projects in Geita region and Tanzania at large. Last year, GGML donated a brand-new microscope to support the fight against TB in Geita Mining areas “he said adding that GGML has been running different health program in collaboration with the Government to solve health challenges in Geita,” he said.

Since its inception, GGML has been working closely with the Government, particularly the Geita District and Town Councils to support various sustainable community projects in Geita region. The Company is also one of the leading corporates supporting national programs through Public-Private Partnerships, including the Kilimanjaro Challenge against HIV and AIDS, which has grown to become the biggest private sector led HIV-AIDS initiatives in Tanzania.

Consistent with its core value of supporting the Geita community to attain sustainable socio-economic development that outlasts its mining activities, GGML has a comprehensive program of direct investment in the local Geita community through a series of social infrastructure and service improvement projects including clean water supply, education and economic development activities in the agriculture, construction, and service sectors.

Between 2018 and 2020, GGML also donated medical equipment to healthcare facilities in Geita and neighboring regions worth over TZS 300 million, whose beneficiaries include Katoro, Kasota and Bukoli health facilities in the outskirts of the Geita Town as well as Sekou Toure Regional Referral Hospital in Mwanza. GGML is the mining industry’s leader, both in revenue generated for the Government, employment of Tanzanians and investment into sustainable community development.
