Geita student takes her life after poor form four exam results

GEITA: A RESIDENT of Msalala Road in Kalangalala Ward, Geita District, Rabia Paulo (19) has committed suicide after recording poor performance in her Form Four national examinations.

Geita Regional Police Commander (RPC), Ms Safia Jongo told reporters that the incident occurred on February 11, 2025, at around 4:00 PM.

She explained that Rabia was a Form Four graduate from Nyanza Secondary School in Geita Municipality and that she scored zero in Form Four national Examinations.

“The deceased expected to perform better in her final exams but things did not work out the way she expected, she therefore decided to take her own life,” said the RPC.

The RPC explained that since the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) announced the 2024 Form Four results on January 26, 2025, Rabia had been deeply distressed.

“She overheard her mother instructing her sister to follow up on her results. Upon hearing this, she locked herself in her room, and her family assumed she was simply resting,” the RPC explained.

She added: “However, it was later discovered that she had hanged herself since she was aware of her Division Zero results before taking this step.”

The RPC urged parents and the community at large to maintain close relationships with children and engage in conversations about their challenges to prevent such tragic incidents.

“There’s a high chance that the mother noticed her daughter’s distress, if she would have taken time to talk to her, she would have realised the extent of her stress,” she said.

The RPC also advised parents to refrain from using threats when their children perform poorly in school saying sometimes poor results are beyond their control.
