Geita outlines strategies to restore its ecology

GEITA region has planned to plant a total of 9 million tree seedlings per year, equivalent to an average of 1.5 million tree seedlings in each of the six district councils in the region.

The move is aimed at restoring ecological features previously affected by human activities.

The Geita Region Administrative Secretary, Prof Godius Kahyarara revealed the plans recently after launching the program of distributing tree seedlings under the Tanzania Forestry Services Agency (TFS) from Silayo plantation trees.

He said up to date the region has successfully planted 4.7 million trees and efforts are being made to achieve the goal through a collaborative effort involving active preparation, distribution and planting of tree seedlings.

He urged people to support the region’s program of restoring the ecological system by establishing livestock grazing farms to avoid overgrazing.

“We must support this by promoting modern cattle breeding for the ecology to be restored as expected,” he said.

Chato District Commissioner Martha Mkumpasi urged people to take care of tree seedlings planted in different locations for the district to grow 1.5 million new trees per year.

“Let’s motivate each other to understand the importance of planting trees, the good thing is that we have enough tree seedlings from TFS offices and the Silayo plantation.”

TFS Conservation Officer of Silayo Plantation trees, Mr Juma Mseti, said the Silayo reserved area is about 69,675 hectares and so far 4300 hectares have been planted from the year 2017 to 2022.

He said the TFS has distributed a total of 250,000 tree seedlings, of which 100,000 seedlings are from the Silayo plantation trees and 150,000 seedlings are from the TFS nursery in Geita district.
