Geita, Namungo reap 21st round fortune

THE 21st round of the Premier League awarded Geita Gold and Namungo maximum points in two separate venues on Tuesday.

At Nyanumbu Stadium in Geita, Geita Gold claimed a slim 1-0 win over Coastal Union, with Edmund John netting the winner early in the 16th minute.

But in Dar es Salaam, things turned sour for hosts KMC who suffered a 3-1 to Namung at Uhuru Stadium.

Namungo’s Ibrahim Ali netted a hat-trick, scoring in the 41st, 56th  and 90th minutes to  assure the  visitors victory over their hosts. KMC scored their consolation goal in the 59th minute through Kelvin Kijili.

Both Geita and Namungo have remained at their usual fifth and sixth positions respectively with 31 and 29 points.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Ben reports that Azam’s Assistant Coach Agrey Moris has admitted that they played below par while Singida Big Stars Head Coach Hans Van Pluijm lauded the attitude and character of his players.

The two met at Liti Stadium in Singida on Monday where Bruno Gome’s first-half set-piece goal gave the hosts an important victory.

Singida Big Stars have now collected 43 points from 21 matches similar to Azam, but goal difference favours Azam who continue to occupy the third slot while the Singida-based side sits fourth in fourth place.

“We accept the outcome and this game is over, we are now focusing on the next match so that we win and keep on moving up on the log.

“Our opponents dominated well the midfield section which made it difficult for us to enjoy the play and they were simply better than us,” said Moris, the former team’s skipper and centre-back.

He also defended goalkeeper Ali Ahamada for the conceded goal saying all goalies in the world do concede goals of that nature as such; it was not his fault at all.

On his part, Pluijm simply clapped for the good job executed by his players which earned them the vital triumph insisting that they were thoroughly prepared for the match.

“We told the boys to work hard for the victory in order to share 43 points with Azam and I am happy they performed well to achieve that.

“In football, there is always room for improvement as such; some mistakes which surfaced will be sorted out amicably at the training ground so as not to repeat them in our next assignment,” he said.

This outcome is therefore going to make the third-place battle of the season between Azam and Singida Big Stars interesting to watch with each vying to earn a ticket to play in CAF Interclub tournaments next.
