Geita Council to terminate contracts of irresponsible contractors

GEITA:  GEITA District Council has resolved to terminate contracts of irresponsible contractors who fail to fulfill their obligations in supplying construction materials.

The Geita District Council Executive Director, Mr Karia Rajabu, revealed this recently after the council’s management team conducted an inspection of educational projects worth 1.8 bn/- in the Busanda constituency.

Mr Rajabu noted that after the inspection of the ongoing projects, they learnt that delays in project completion were primarily due to contractors failing to supply construction materials on time.

He added that the council management has identified the root cause of the challenges faced by contractors in public projects is that many contractors win tenders without the capacity to fulfill them.

“These are council projects; I urge you, when announcing tenders in the NEST system, to assess the contractors’ capacity to complete the tasks they are bidding for in order to avoid these challenges,” Mr Rajabu emphasised.

Additionally, Mr Rajabu urged teachers overseeing classroom construction to ensure that the materials supplied by contractors meet the required quality standards and to report any issues promptly.

Earlier, Acting Secondary Education Officer of the Council, Ms Rehema Mustafa, named some of the incomplete projects, as construction of a secondary school located in the Nyamigota Ward, worth 584m/-, expansion of infrastructure at Kagenge High School valued at 481m/- and Lutozo High Secondary School valued at 381m/-.

Another project is the primary school project on Afya Street, which started with community efforts and later expanded to nine classrooms funded by the BOOST fund, valued at 351m/-.

Mr Deogratius Wilson, one of the workers on the visited projects, admitted that failure by contractors to supply construction materials on time has been the main reason behind the delay of the projects.
