TANZANIA : THE Treasury Registrar (TR) office has instructed the new board members of two subsidiary companies of the Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), to be innovative and efficient in order to promote growth of the oil and gas sector in the country.
The subsidiary companies are Gas Supply Company Limited (GASCO) and TANOIL Investments Limited.
The directives were issued on Thursday by the Director of Management Services with the TR office, Ms Neema Musomba during the launch of the new boards.
“You need to assure yourself that you are in charge of the government’s vision and you have to establish strong systems to improve operational performance and be creative so that you can operate commercially,” said Ms Musomba.
She added that the TR office expects the two boards to set strategies that reflect the vision of self-management by getting profits and attain the goals and expectations of a good relationship between employees, management and the boards.
She urged both boards to present implementation progress to TPDC every quarter which will also be submitted to TR.
TPDC Board Chairman Ambassador Ombeni Sefue said that the board will not allow members to be ineffective because they have been appointed basing on various criteria.
Ambassador Sefue said the selected board members are people with various professions that were compatible with the company’s activities and expertise on the field.
He said that there was a huge competition because they received a total of 289 applications of which 104 applied for GASCO member, 112 TANOIL and 73 applications did not specify the company they wanted.
“Members should not let us down instead bring knowledge and experience that will be beneficial to the companies. If you fail to attain the goals it is obvious that you are doing it deliberately because you are professional people,” said Sefue adding that such members will have no rooms in the boards.
Ambassador Sefue asked the board members to manage and lead the management and not to perform management tasks.
He urged them to work in managing its base and systems especially in human resources.
“If you come across any challenges use them as opportunities to enable the government to reach the intended goals,” he stressed.
On his part, Chairman of the two boards Mr William Chiume promised to focus on commercial innovation while implementing their duties.
Mr Chiume said first, GASCO will look at the possibility of having Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the fuel stations and for the TANOIL they will work on operational systems and fuel reserves to support emerging challenges.
