First sustainable land transport week set for launch

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Ministry of Transport in collaboration with the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) has announced the launch of the firstever Sustainable Land Transport Week 2025, aimed at promoting clean energy in transport to cut carbon emissions and reduce operational costs for transport operators.
The new initiative comes as Tanzania intensifies the shift towards clean energy solutions in the transport sector.
Recent milestones include the construction of natural gas refuelling stations to encourage motorists to move away from petroleum products.
LATRA Director General, CPA Habib Saluo, told journalists in Dar es Salaam on Friday that the event, scheduled for November 24–29, is part of implementing a UN General Assembly resolution that declared November 26 as World Sustainable Transport Day.
“The week will be commemorated in support of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s efforts to drive the national clean energy agenda. The theme will be: ‘Green Transport and Innovation, focusing on sustainable solutions and the adoption of digital technologies in transport,” he said.
He explained that the event would also serve as a platform to discuss inclusive infrastructure development, particularly for people with disabilities, across the road, rail and cable transport subsectors.
The commemorations are expected to bring together government agencies, private operators and development partners to deliberate on strategies to improve transport services while advancing environmental goals.
Assistant Director of Railway Transport Services in the Ministry of Works, Mr Benjamini Mbimbi, said the week would allow transport stakeholders, including private operators, to showcase innovations that can help reduce carbon emissions.
Mr Saluo further appealed to journalists to use their platforms responsibly to foster unity as the nation heads towards the October 29 general election, stressing the role of the media in shaping public opinion during such a critical period.
The Sustainable Land Transport Week will highlight Tanzania’s efforts to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, showcasing innovations that can transform the transport sector.
