FAO launches TANFISH, a digital system to help fish processors access global market
DODOMA: THE United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched a digital marketplace, TANFISH, to help Tanzanian fishers and fish processors access wider markets by selling their products online directly from their production areas.
Speaking during a high-level side event in Dodoma, FAO Fisheries Specialist Dr Hasheem Muumin said the platform enables fishers and processors to register, upload photos of their fish products and connect with buyers across the country.
He said the platform accommodates a wide range of products, including fresh, dried and frozen fish from marine waters, lakes and aquaculture farms, allowing producers to reach customers beyond their local markets.
“TANFISH protects buyers’ payments while giving fishers and processors access to larger and more reliable markets,” Dr Muumin said.
According to him, FAO has already trained more than 500 fishers, processors and other stakeholders, all of whom have registered on the platform. More than two tonnes of fish have so far been traded through TANFISH, with major markets including Dodoma and other parts of the country.
Dr Muumin said the initiative initially focused on communities around Lake Tanganyika, but it has now expanded to include fish processors and traders from Lake Victoria and Tanzania’s coastal areas, creating a nationwide digital marketplace for fisheries products.

The platform is available on both Android and Apple devices, making it easier for users to access the service.
To maintain product quality and consumer confidence, sellers are required to comply with all relevant government regulations, including possession of valid business documentation. Buyers are also required to provide accurate delivery information to ensure fish products reach their intended destinations safely and efficiently.
The initiative is part of FAO’s efforts to promote digital solutions that strengthen agricultural and fisheries value chains, improve market access and increase incomes for producers across Tanzania.
