Fake ‘Facebook brigadier’ nabbed

DODOMA: THE Police Force has arrested a motorcycle taxi (bodaboda) rider Samweli Mwita for allegedly creating a fake Facebook account using the name and photo of JKT Brigadier Hassan Mabena with intent to defraud.

A statement issued in Dodoma over the weekend by the Force’s spokesperson DCP David Misime stated that Mwita is a resident of Majohe in Dar es Salaam.

The suspect reportedly posted a message stating: “I would like to remind you that vacancies have been announced and full requirements are available. Follow all procedures. I love you very much, youth,” in an attempt to scam the public.

According to the statement, the arrest followed investigations by police cybercrime experts after receiving a tip-off which enhanced the arrest of the suspect on April 18, 2026.

Police have warned individuals against using other people’s names and images, including those of government leaders and businesspersons, to create social media accounts, noting that such acts constitute a criminal offence.

“The public has also been urged to remain cautious and avoid trusting all information shared on social media without verifying it from credible sources, to avoid falling victim to fraud or legal issues,” it was said in the statement.

The Force added that investigation is still underway and the suspect will be subjected to further legal action.
