F1 Grand Prix planned for Zanzibar
ZANZIBAR: 2.5 square kilometre area in the southwest of Unguja Island has been allocated to install a racing track.
The Zanzibar Circuit East of Africa Limited (ZCEAL) has signed a memorandum of under- standing (MoU) in Italy recently with stakeholders on behalf of the Formula One Project organisers and shareholders.
“This is a very important step that further confirms the strong will to bring this project to reality in the African continent for the first time,” said Toufiq Salim Turky, a Member of the Parliament for Mpendae constituency in the Isles.
The MoU also involved the Executive Director of Zanzibar Investment Promotion Agency (ZIPA), Sharif Ali Sharif who rep- resented the Isles government.
Present at the signing in Italy were Cristian Borto- lato, the founder and head of the project, Enrico Sartini and Giancarlo Fisichella, the former F1 driver who will be in charge of supervising the technical part of the track.
It is a development in the ambitious project by ZCEAL after a resolution dated September 2022 by the ZIPA on the area for the construction of the first cir- cuit in the African territory for cars and motorbikes was signed.
“I think we can continue with this pace. The next steps will be the official presentation of the project at the premises of our partner, Ycona Luxury Resort, scheduled for spring 2025 in the presence of President Hussein Mwinyi,” he explained.
The laying of the foundation stone is scheduled for September next year and the inauguration of the first part of the circuit will take place by the end of 2027, explained Bortolato, the founder of the project.
