Exploit business opportunities, Special Seat MPs tell women, youths

SPECIAL seats MP Janeth Mahawanga (CCM) has called upon women and youths to fully exploit emerging business opportunities available in Dar es Salaam Region for economic prosperity.

Ms Mahawanga made the call during the award-giving ceremony for successful women entrepreneurs under Tisha Mama Foundation   in Dar es Salaam at the weekend.

“Dar es Salaam has several business opportunities compared to other regions because it is the commercial city,” she noted.

The lawmaker, who is also Executive Director of Tisha Mama Foundation, noted that in supporting efforts by President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan in empowering women economically in the country, she decided to establish an institution for that purpose.

“I do this to support the government to achieve the national objectives as highlighted in the Five-Year Development Plan, (FYDPIII 2021/2022 – 2025/2026), Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs 2025), the agenda 2030, and the government’s commitment to the UN generation equality agenda on supporting and empowering women across the country,” she added.

She noted that the organisation has been building capacity among women and young people through entrepreneurship education, financial education, economy and investment opportunities, creativity, self-awareness and self-confidence.

She added that from next year she expects to expand support to women in other regions so that they also benefit from the opportunities.

“We boost self-confidence and creativity among women and young people in leadership, entrepreneurship, education and employment,” she said.

Speaking about the awards, she said the organisation has a special procedure to recognise contribution from successful women entrepreneurs in Dar es Salaam before awarding them.

“The awards have been successful because the awarded women have also managed to get international awards, earn goodwill ambassadorial contracts for introducing various products or advertisements which create more employment opportunities for women,” she noted.

Another Special Seats MP, Ms Hawa Chakoma, said Ms Mahawanga’s work supports the efforts of President Samia in empowering women in various sectors of the country.
