Ex-EAC staff paid 1.0bn/- long awaited pension payments

DODOMA: THE government has paid pensions totalling 1.085bn/- to 1,794 former employees of defunct East African Community (EAC) institutions.
Finance Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba said the payment, covering the period from April to June 2025, was made to former staff of several institutions: TTCL (629), TRC (792), TPC (252) and TPA (8).
Dr Nchemba made the statement in the National Assembly on behalf of the Minister of State in the President’s Office – Planning and Investment, in response to a question by Special Seats MP Ms Restituta Mbogo, (CCM)who wanted to know when will the government settle the payments.
He explained that former employees of the defunct Tanzania Posts and Telecommunications Corporation (TP&TC) and the East African Railways Corporation were initially paid lump-sum benefits through the Office of the Paymaster General in 2005.

“However, after those payments, some returned with underpayment claims, which the ministry addressed through appropriate procedures,” said Dr Nchemba.
He noted that in 2009, the government reinstated the retirees into the Pension Register, and they are now receiving quarterly pension payments through the Office of the Treasury Registrar.
“These retirees currently receive their monthly pensions on a quarterly basis,” he said, while commending lawmakers for their continued efforts to ensure the retirees are paid accordingly.
In a supplementary question, MP Mbogo asked whether the government was ready to hold discussions with other retirees with similar claims.
The minister responded affirmatively
