EWURA warns fuel stations over inflated pump prices

DODOMA: THE Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has issued a stern warning to fuel stations selling petroleum products at inflated prices, contrary to the indicative prices set by the authority.
Speaking at the ongoing Public Service Week exhibitions at Chinangali Grounds in Dodoma, EWURA Director General Dr James Andilile revealed that while the current pump price for petrol stands at 2,905/- per litre, reports have surfaced of some stations charging as high as 5,000/- per litre, an act that constitutes a serious breach of regulations.
“We call upon the public to report such malpractice by dialling our toll-free number 0800110030. Any fuel station found violating the indicative pricing will face stern actions, including licence revocation,” Dr Andilile said.
Dr Andilile also highlighted EWURA’s shift to digital service delivery, noting that licensees and stakeholders no longer need to physically visit the regulator’s six zonal offices to access services.
“Our improved ICT systems now enable users to access key services online from anywhere in the country. This transformation is aimed at reducing inconvenience and increasing efficiency in public service delivery,” he said.

He added that the authority will continue upgrading its digital platforms to align with current needs and the government’s vision of enhancing accountability through technological innovation.
As a regulator of essential services including water, electricity, petroleum and natural gas, Dr Andilile underscored the importance of transparency, urging all regulated entities to publish customer service charters on their official websites.
“If you operate in the water sector, ensure all service-related information and customers’ rights are readily available online. This will empower citizens to understand their entitlements and how to lodge complaints when their rights are violated,” he said.
Dr Andilile described the Public Service Week exhibitions as a crucial platform for direct citizen engagement, enabling them to receive services and information from various government agencies in one location.
He said EWURA has brought all its digital service tools to its pavilion at the exhibition, allowing citizens to receive on-the-spot assistance.
