EWURA raises fuel prices by 6 percent

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has announced new fuel prices for April 2025, showing an increase in petrol and kerosene prices despite a decrease in importation costs by an average of 6.08 percent for petrol and 7.09 percent for diesel.

In Dar es Salaam, petrol is now selling at 3,037/- per liter, up from 2,996/- last month. Kerosene has also increased to 3,053/- from 3,036/-.

However, diesel prices have dropped to 2,936/- per liter from 2,885/-.

The price increase has also been observed in Tanga and Mtwara regions, where petrol prices have risen by 41 percent and 40 percent per liter, respectively.

EWURA has cited a 1.91 percent rise in foreign exchange conversion costs as one of the reasons for the price hike.

Additionally, price adjustments may be related to changes in transportation and fuel distribution costs within the country.

Despite the decline in importation costs, energy sector analysts suggest that the price increase could also be influenced by supply conditions and domestic demand.

“The state of the economy and the value of the Tanzanian shilling play a significant role in fuel prices, even when global purchasing costs decrease,” said Enock Musa, an energy sector analyst.

EWURA has urged fuel traders to adhere to the price caps announced by the authority and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those who raise prices unlawfully.
