‘Embrace inclusive leadership, good governance’

KIBAHA: THE government has emphasised the need to continue investing in leadership and good governance to enable public executives to provide better services to citizens, particularly as the country implements the goals of Dira 2050.

Deputy Permanent Secretary in the President’s Office (Public Service Management and Good Governance), Prisca Lwangili, made the statement recently at the launch of a six-day training programme on Sustainable and Inclusive Women Leadership and Management (SIIWOLEMA) at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School (MJNLS) in Kibaha Municipality.

She said the training had come at the right time as the country had embarked on implementing Vision 2050, which, among other objectives, focuses on projects that benefit people socially and economically.

“At a time when our country has started implementing the goals of Vision 2050, the Government’s focus is not to achieve those goals by relying on funds alone, but by using institutions with strong operational systems and better management of resources,” she said.

She added that the Government aimed to introduce major reforms in the public service by ensuring the availability of an accountable, professional and integrity-driven workforce.

Ms Lwangili noted that the nation could not achieve its goals without participation from various groups in decision-making, saying the Government had been creating a conducive environment for inclusive leadership while observing gender inclusion guidelines.

On performance contracts, she said the Government’s appraisal systems were intended to provide feedback on institutional performance and determine whether activities reflected set objectives.

“The Government’s goal is to build institutions with executives who have skills and character, who will lead institutions that can compete with the pace in various sectors globally,” she said.

Earlier, school’s principal, Professor Marcelina Chijoriga, said the training had attracted mainly women leaders from public institutions, as well as a few participants from the private sector from Mainland Tanzania and one from Zanzibar.

She said the training was designed to build leaders with patriotism and nationalistic values, particularly during implementation of Vision 2050.

“The subjects which will be taught are very essential for the institution’s growth, which will eventually contribute to the development of our country,” she said.

Participants include officials from NSSF, UWT, PPRA, Tanzania Tea Board, Prisons Department, Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila, Department of Health Zanzibar, Weights and Measures Agency, Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, TCRA, IRUWASA, TTCL and Cashewnut Board of Tanzania, as well as representatives from the private sector.

One of the participants, NSSF Principal Compliance Officer at Nzega in Tabora, Grace Mutegeki, said she expected the training to improve her efficiency at work.
