Education enthusiasts hails ICC model
MOROGORO: Education stakeholders in the country continue to commend the Interaction Competencies with Children (ICC) model saying it has all the required components to end violence against children.
The ICC model is a practicable, scientifically proven solution formulated by a team of researchers from Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE), University of Bielefeld and University of Konstanz both from Germany.
DUCE produced three researchers who are Dr Mabula Nkuba, Dr. Faustine Masath as well as Dr. Eliud Kabelege while from University of Bielefeld, Prof. Tobias Hecker joined the team and together, they managed to come up with the scientifically developed ICC model.
On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, ICC findings were presented during a special forum held at Nguzo Primary School in Morogoro region where 16 government primary schools were involved during the research conducted from April 2024 to March 2025.
In his keynote speech, Morogoro Municipal Council Education Officer Dr Gregory Fabian highlighted that as insisted by different government policies, it is the responsibility of each person to end violence against children.
“It is my belief that through this research, we will make steady progress in ensuring that violence against children is contained and create an enabling environment for our children to learn and grow well,” he said.
He added that ICC model has been developed in accordance with Tanzania context hence its implementation is likely going to produce tangible results in schools.
He also thanked researchers for including parents and teachers during their study saying proper nurturing of a child should consider home and school environment.
Again, Dr Fabian acknowledged DUCE as well as University of Bielefeld and University of Konstanz for jointly producing the research meant to solve problems in the society.
Earlier, DUCE Acting Principal Prof Amani Lusekelo appreciated the ICC model describing it as a reliable tool set to reduce violence against children from homes and school premises.
“We have the duty to use well all the recommendations that have been made in this research in order to create a good atmosphere for proper upbringing of our children so that they can grow in a non-violent atmosphere which in turn will make them better persons in the future,” he said.
Furthermore, Prof Lusekelo thanked Morogoro Municipal for giving them permission to conduct the research in schools available in their municipality while urging then to fully cooperate in its implementation.
Meanwhile, a short course on Interaction Competencies with Children – for Teachers and Parents has already been introduced at DUCE whereby trainees will learn Teacher-student and Parent-child interaction, violence prevention, effective discipline strategies as well as identifying and supporting burdened children.
