EACOP delivers economic and social benefits to communities along the pipeline

TANGA: THE implementation of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Project continues to deliver economic and social benefits to communities living along the pipeline corridor, with residents expressing satisfaction over the project’s implementation.

A resident of Ndaoya Street in Chongoleani Ward, Zuberi Mbwana, said compensation paid to people affected by the project has enabled many families to build better homes and improve their living standards.

He said the project ensured community participation throughout its implementation, from the planning stage to the construction phase, through regular public meetings that gave residents an opportunity to share their views and recommendations, many of which were incorporated into various aspects of the project.

According to Mbwana, in addition to receiving compensation, affected residents were allowed to retain and relocate their property from the project area, including trees, crops and fruit, helping to minimize the impact of relocation.

He added that EACOP also provided transportation services to move these belongings from farms to residents’ new homes, making the relocation process easier and more convenient.

On infrastructure, Mbwana said the project has significantly improved the road network in Chongoleani Ward. Roads constructed under the project are now accessible throughout the year, unlike before the project’s implementation.

He also commended EACOP for supporting community development through the improvement of infrastructure at Chongoleani Secondary School. He said the initiative will enhance the teaching and learning environment, contributing to improved education outcomes for students in the area.
