TANGA: THE Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), a key shareholder in the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project, has praised the initiative for its commitment to international standards, particularly in environmental protection and the well-being of host communities.
Chairman of the UNOC Board, Mr Mathias Katamba paid tribute to EACOP, following a tour of the oil tanks and terminal sites at the Chongoleani Peninsula in Tanga.
“We are confident that this project is environmentally friendly and is being executed with the highest regard for environmental protection, in line with global standards,” said Mr Katamba.
He said that the project has been designed to safeguard the communities along its route at every stage of its implementation.
“This project is not only about economic gains but also about ensuring environmental stewardship,” he said during his visit to the marine export terminal.
Mr Katamba added that the benefits of the project will extend beyond the immediate revenue from petroleum sales, contributing to longterm economic development.

Addressing critics who have raised concerns about the project, particularly regarding environmental impact, Mr Katamba said, “The implementation of this project clearly demonstrates our commitment to environmental protection.
We are also mindful of our responsibility to future generations.” He said that the multiplier effect of the project will be significant, benefitting both Uganda and Tanzania.
The EACOP aims to improve the lives of people in both countries by enhancing energy security and shaping the future of energy consumption.
“We are looking beyond just oil. We will also leverage resources like natural gas to transform the way we consume energy, reducing reliance on firewood and the environmental degradation caused by charcoal production,” he said.
UNOC’s Chief Legal Officer, Peter Mulisa, acknowledged that the project had faced criticism over the past 13 years, but he stressed that its implementation demonstrates a clear focus on environmental protection in line with international standards.
EACOP’s Community Relations Supervisor, Daniel Semkiwa, added that the project is committed to managing both hazardous and non-hazardous waste responsibly, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
