EACOP achieves 99.3 percent compensation of payments in Geita region

GEITA: THE East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project has successfully paid compensation to 1,482 affected people, equivalent to 99.3pc of the 1,492 people affected by the project in Geita Region.

The residents are among 10,223 people affected by the EACOP project in Tanzania who deserve a total of 35/- billion compensation following the assessments of their properties and affected areas.

The Acting EACOP Project Officer from the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), Mr Jumanne Saidi, made the statement recently during a special workshop for journalists held in Geita.

He said that as of August 31st, 2026, only 10 affected people remained uncompensated in Geita who are residents of Shinyanga A and Shinyanga B villages in Mbogwe District Council.

“These are people who either shifted away from their areas, while others remain uninformed.

“In some areas, no one has come forward to claim ownership of the land to date. However, the entitlements of those who have not come forward have been preserved,” Mr Jumanne said.

Mr Jumanne said compensation assessment records show that people affected by the EACOP project in Geita Region are entitled to a total of 4.2bn/-, with the majority having already received their payments.

“As of August 31st, 2026, implementation of the project had reached 87.8 percent, and the expectation is that operations will commence on January 15th, 2027,” he said.

Jumanne said that, so far, more than 170bn/-   has been spent on payments to service providers and suppliers of various goods for the implementation of the project.

“As we approach the operational phase, Tanzanians should prepare themselves to take advantage of opportunities in employment, training, technology and other areas,” Jumanne said.

The Head of TPDC’s Public Relations and Communications Unit, Marie Msellemu, said the corporation was committed to continuing to provide accurate information to facilitate productive reporting on the EACOP project.

It should be noted that the EACOP project, which runs from Hoima in Uganda to Chongoleani in Tanga, Tanzania, covers a total distance of 1,443 km, with 82percent of the pipeline located in Tanzania and passing through eight regions.
