Dr Samia sends condolence following the death of Fatma Karume, widow of Zanzibar’s first President

ZANZIBAR: THE President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has sent a message of condolence following the death of Mama Fatma Karume, widow of the late Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume, Zanzibar’s first President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council. She died on September 21, 2026.

President Samia extended her condolences to Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi; former Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume; the family of the late Sheikh Karume; relatives, friends, the people of Zanzibar and Tanzanians at large.

She also prayed for God to grant the bereaved family and those affected by the loss strength, comfort and patience during this difficult period.

President Samia said Mama Fatma’s death was a loss to both her family and the nation as a whole, noting that she was an important part of Zanzibar’s history. Her life was closely associated with key periods in the country’s history, including the struggle for independence, the Zanzibar Revolution and the establishment of the United Republic of Tanzania.

President Samia further said Mama Fatma would continue to be remembered, honoured and respected for her contribution to preserving the country’s historical memory and heritage, as well as for her role in advancing Tanzania’s political, economic and social development.
