Dr Mwinyi lauds Indian government’s ties with Tanzania in education, health, technology sectors

NEW DELHI: THE President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has expressed his appreciation to the government of India for its continued commitment to strengthening development cooperation with Tanzania across a wide range of sectors, including education, healthcare, trade, investment, water, science, and technology.

President Mwinyi made the remarks on July 19, 2026, during a meeting with India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr S. Jaishankar, at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi, India.

During their discussions, President Mwinyi called on the Government of India to increase scholarship and training opportunities for students and professionals from Zanzibar. He also emphasized the need to strengthen the IIT Madras Zanzibar campus by introducing additional academic programmes and supporting the construction of its permanent campus.

In addition, President Mwinyi presented Dr. Jaishankar with the Master Plan for the construction of the permanent IIT Madras Zanzibar campus. The initiative aims to position Zanzibar as a regional hub for higher education, research, innovation, and technology across Africa.

On his part, Dr Jaishankar commended the progress made by IIT Madras Zanzibar and reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment to further strengthening its development partnership with Tanzania across various sectors.

President Mwinyi is continuing his official visit to India, where he is meeting with senior government leaders to advance development cooperation between Zanzibar, Tanzania, and India.
