Dr Idriss Rashid: Former BoT Governor passes away

DAR ES SALAAM: THE former Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, Dr Idriss Rashid, has died while receiving treatment at Shifaa Hospital.

According to preliminary reports, the former governor passed away today, March 14, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, where he had been admitted for medical care.

Dr Rashid served as Governor of the Bank of Tanzania from 1993 to 1998, a period when Tanzania was undergoing major economic reforms and opening its financial sector to competition from private banks.

During his tenure, he oversaw key monetary policies and banking sector reforms that helped strengthen the regulation and supervision of financial institutions in the country.

Government leaders, economists and stakeholders in the financial sector have begun sending condolence messages following his death, remembering him as a key figure who contributed significantly to the development of Tanzania’s financial sector.
