Dr Gwajima orders TICD college to lead community development reforms

ARUSHA: THE Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Dr Dorothy Gwajima, has directed the newly inaugurated Board of the Tengeru Institute of Community Development (TICD) to spearhead reforms in community development education by strengthening academic quality, research and innovation in line with the National Development Vision 2050.

Speaking during the inauguration of the institute’s fourth governing board in Arusha on August 6, 2026, Dr Gwajima said the government expects the board to transform the institution into a centre of excellence for producing professionals capable of addressing emerging community development challenges.

She said the government has undertaken strategic reforms by integrating eight Community Development and Community Development Technical colleges into campuses of the Tengeru Institute of Community Development, effective July 1, 2026.

According to the minister, the move is aimed at improving operational efficiency, enhancing the quality of education and research, and strengthening the institute’s capacity to produce skilled graduates who can respond to national development priorities.

Dr Gwajima further directed the board to ensure the institute embraces technological advancements, including the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI), while reviewing academic curricula to align them with labour market demands and the country’s development agenda.

She said the government envisions TICD as a leading institution in education, research and innovation that will contribute significantly to community development and the implementation of the National Development Vision 2050.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the TICD Governing Board, Dr John Elton Lusingu, thanked the government for the confidence placed in the board and pledged to discharge its responsibilities with professionalism, accountability and patriotism.

He said the board would work closely with the ministry, the institute’s management and other stakeholders to strengthen the institution’s academic excellence, promote research and innovation, expand the use of technology, improve curricula and produce graduates equipped to meet the country’s evolving development needs.
