Dr Bashiru opens Researchers’ Conference as it seeks to advance fisheries, aquaculture sectors
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, has launched the Fourth Researchers’ Conference, bringing together researchers from 17 countries to discuss the development of the fisheries and aquaculture sectors for sustainable development.
The conference was held today, August 24, 2026, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam, with participants discussing ways to advance the fisheries and aquaculture sectors while sharing scientific knowledge and experience aimed at increasing productivity and promoting sustainable development.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, Ambassador Dr Kakurwa said fisheries activities are science-based and require skilled and knowledgeable professionals to ensure the sector develops productively and delivers benefits to communities.
He said the three-day conference would provide participants with an opportunity to learn, exchange experiences and gain new knowledge on fisheries and aquaculture, which would contribute to strengthening the development of the two sectors.

“Fisheries activities are science-based and require skilled and knowledgeable professionals to ensure that the sector develops productively and benefits communities,” he said.
He added that conferences of this nature are important because they enable researchers and experts from different parts of the world to discuss challenges and opportunities facing the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
According to the minister, the technical discussions also provide an opportunity to identify new technologies and approaches that can be used to increase production, improve the management of aquatic resources and ensure the sustainable development of the sectors.
He said collaboration among researchers from different countries is essential for building a foundation for evidence-based policies and decision-making, while enabling countries to access appropriate knowledge and technologies to address challenges facing the fisheries and aquaculture sectors.
