Dodoma’s sports tourism drive hits fortune

DODOMA: WITH over 8,000 multinational entries, Dodoma Marathon is here again targeting to heighten the country’s capital’s status as the main player in sports tourism.

The event is one of the sports tourism activities that have heralded the capital’s sporting excellence, mirrored itself in the long-distance races, but other sports disciplines like cricket, golf, motorsports, and boxing are also reportedly seeking a stronghold as widely reported in the recent years.

Before its present capital status, Dodoma reigned as one of the breeding grounds for long-distance runners, with Juma Ikanga and John Yuda, being the region’s figureheads of marathons and other longdistance races.

“Though it is yet to gain nationwide attention, cricket is gaining ground here and the youths involved in this grassroots level project are doing well,” said Benson Mwita the cricket coach who runs the project.

With two golf courses underway for completion in the capital, Dodoma is likely to see an improvement in sports tourism which is currently dominated by Dodoma Marathon and Dodoma Jiji, who are the capital’s lone envoys in the Premier League.

“Cricket is yet to start hosting big events that attract many people like the athletics and the Premier League, but the sport has a bright future in the region,” said Mwita.

The widely advertised Dodoma Marathon, which marks its fifth edition this year, will be flagged off in the capital on July 28th this year attracting over 8,000 participants, according to the organisers.

“This year’s Dodoma Marathon will be unique with increased sponsorship,” said a report from the event’s organisers.

The Dodoma Marathon is jointly sponsored by Vodacom Tanzania and NBC Bank and the move, according to the athletics stakeholders, the two firms’ partnership will add a dimension to the beauty of this year’s grand race.
