Dodoma is a hub of all the government’s operations, Dr Nchemba insists

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has affirmed its intention to ensure all government operations and services are carried out at the country’s capital, Dodoma, to bring services closer to citizens in an efficient and accessible manner, Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba said today, January 22, 2026.

He said all institutions that have completed the construction of their office buildings in Dodoma should vacate government buildings in Dar es Salaam and allow them to be used by institutions that are not required to relocate to Dodoma but are still renting office space.

Dr Nchemba made the remarks today, Thursday, January 22, 2026, during an inspection tour of the offices of the Ministry of Water and the Ministry of Minerals located at the Government City in Mtumba, Dodoma.

“I commend you for relocating to the Capital City. All government institutions must recognize that the national capital is Dodoma, and all services should be provided here. This is not a temporary camp, and we will not operate two parallel capitals,” said Dr Nchemba.

He further directed the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office to instruct the Chief Secretary to form a special team to assess all unused government buildings in Dar es Salaam so that they can be allocated to other institutions in need of office space, instead of continuing to incur rental costs.

In another development, the Prime Minister said that since government offices are now located close to one another, there is no need for excessive exchange of official letters on implementation matters that require urgent decisions. Instead, he advised leaders and officials to adopt a culture of visiting one another’s offices to resolve pending issues on time.

Speaking to employees of the Ministry of Water, Dr Nchemba urged them to intensify efforts to eliminate water losses across the country. He emphasized that the implementation of the new development vision must go hand in hand with improved standards and infrastructure that guarantee Tanzanians reliable access to clean and safe water.

Similarly, while inspecting the buildings of the Ministry of Minerals, the Prime Minister encouraged minerals experts to continue strengthening mineral research in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the country’s mineral resources and wealth.

For his part, the Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso, thanked President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for approving funds for the construction of large office buildings for the ministry, which have provided employees with a conducive and safe working environment.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, said the construction of the ministry’s building has enabled the full implementation of President Samia’s directive to ensure that all government services are provided in one location. He noted that the move has eliminated challenges previously faced by Tanzanians who had to travel long distances to access mineral-related services.
