Diamond, Ronaldo among celebrities hit by new Twitter policy

Bongo Flava musician Naseeb Abdul alias ‘Diamond Platnumz’ is among famous individuals whose blue tick marks have been removed as Twitter starts executing its new subscription policy.

Twitter verification is a system intended to communicate the authenticity of a Twitter account. When introduced in June 2009, the system provided the site’s readers with a means to distinguish genuine notable account holders, such as celebrities and organizations, from impostors or parodies.

Apart from Diamond, other celebrities who have been affected by the decision are Burna Boy as well as the pop superstar, Beyonce and footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.

As of today, Christian Ronaldo has a total of 108.3 million followers, Beyonce 15.5 million, Burna Boy 8.3 million and Diamond having 1.3 million followers.

Various global media have reported on Friday that there is chaos and confusion on Twitter as thousands of verified accounts lose their blue ticks hence it is difficult to know which one is a genuine account.

Anyone wishing to retain the check beside their name has to pay $84 (£67) a year.

Top government officials and celebrities, media organisations, business people and companies are among the users who have lost their blue tick marks, with copycat accounts starting to emerge.

However, among celebrities who have maintained their blue ticks are Rihanna, Taylor Swift with 92.5 million followers and others.
