Diabetes cases rising amid low public awareness, TDA warns

DAR ES SALAAM: The number of people living with diabetes continues to rise, while public awareness on how to prevent and manage the disease remains low, the Tanzania Diabetes Association (TDA) has warned.

TDA Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Filbert Nyoni made the remarks today during the 13th Health Conference, saying more efforts are needed to educate both the public and people already living with diabetes.

He said that while awareness campaigns targeting people who do not have diabetes are ongoing, there is still a challenge in educating patients on how to properly manage the disease and prevent serious complications.

According to Nyoni, poorly managed diabetes can lead to complications including wounds that may result in amputation, as well as kidney and eye problems.

He said TDA is working with the Government to raise public awareness through scientific forums, regional and district health teams, public meetings, and television and radio programmes aimed at reaching a wider audience.

Nyoni also identified unhealthy lifestyles as one of the major factors contributing to the increase in diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

He said many people do not engage in regular physical exercise or other activities that keep the body active, while the consumption of unhealthy foods continues to increase.

He further cited smoking and excessive alcohol consumption as risk factors for diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.

Nyoni urged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles by maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly and avoiding harmful habits in order to reduce the risk of developing diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.
