DEDs directed to resolve water woes in schools

DODOMA: THE government has directed District Council Executive Directors (DEDs) to ensure they liaise with Regional Administrative Secretaries (RASs) in their respective areas for the objective of resolving water woes in schools.

The directive was issued yesterday in Parliament by Deputy Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) Zainab Katimba when responding to the question posed by CCM Special Seats MP Mwantum Zodo.

The legislator sought a response from the government on its strategies meant to resolve water woes afflicting some primary and secondary schools in the country.

According to the deputy minister, President Samia Suluhu Hassan‘s government purchased a total of 26 water drilling machines that were distributed to the regions for the objectives of availing water to residents.

Ms Katimba said DEDs should also involve the Ministry of Water to ensure water woes are resolved in schools to create favorable learning and teaching environment.

The MPs said lack of water in schools has been inconveniencing both school children and teachers, negatively impacting performance.

Joseph Kakunda (CCM-Urambo) raised concern on the shortage of water in some schools, especially in institutions with flush toilets. However, Ms Katimba said it is the government determination to ensure it avails all necessary services to not only schools but also other entities such as hospital.

According to Ms Katimba, the government has been instituting various measures meant to resolve water woes in schools, including dishing out funds to finance drilling of water wells.

Other measures include building water harvesting infrastructure and purchasing water tanks. The deputy minister said her ministry will continue closely working with the Ministry of Water to resolve the problem.
