DC underlines collaborative efforts in environment protection

COAST REGION: KIBAHA District Commissioner Nickson Simon has emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in conserving the environment.

Mr Simon highlighted that President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan has been encouraging various stakeholders to support the government’s vision of eliminating the use of firewood and charcoal by 2034.

The District Commissioner noted that President Samia has been a strong advocate for the use of clean energy to protect the environment and accelerate economic development. He made these remarks during the launch of the nongovernmental organisation Tanzania Women Empowerment Network (TAWEN) in the Coast Region. The event took place in Kibaha Town on Wednesday this week.

DC Simon stated that President Samia has not only been at the forefront of campaigning for the use of clean energy for cooking but has also created a supportive environment for stakeholders to contribute to the government’s initiatives to advance this agenda.

On another note, DC Simon revealed that 16 new industries are set to be constructed in the region next year. He urged women to seize the opportunities available in the industrial sector.

TAWEN’s Executive Director and Founder, Ms Florence Masunga, stated that the organisation has successfully launched its activities in 11 regions since its establishment in 2022.

“Our primary aim is to support our President’s efforts in promoting the use of clean energy to protect the environment and bring positive changes to women, who are the main users of firewood and charcoal,” she said.

She added that the organisation has distributed 1,000 gas stoves to women in various parts of the country. Ms Masunga also mentioned that the organisation has hosted two conferences, including one in the Arusha Region that brought together representatives from 15 countries.

The event was attended by over 700 women from the region, along with officials from the National Microfinance Bank (NMB), government and non-governmental organisations, Kibaha Education Centre (KEC), and other environmental stakeholders.
