Dar, Maputo deepen health diplomacy
TANZANIA: TANZANIA and Mozambique are set to deepen health cooperation through a proposed medical outreach programme in Cabo Delgado, with both countries describing the initiative as an opportunity to translate longstanding diplomatic relations into tangible benefits for their people.
The proposed Tanzania Mozambique Medical Outreach and Friendship Mission follows discussions between Tanzania’s Ambassador to Mozambique, Hamad Khamis Hamad and Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo on extending specialised medical services to communities in the province.
Speaking on the initiative, Ambassador Hamad said bilateral relations should go beyond meetings between leaders and government officials and produce tangible benefits for ordinary citizens.
“Relations between two countries should not be limited to meetings between leaders and government officials. They should ultimately touch the lives of our people,” he said.
He said health was among the areas where Tanzania and Mozambique could work closely to directly improve the welfare of their people.
Ambassador Hamad said the proposed medical outreach reflected Tanzania’s people-centred approach to diplomacy, under which cooperation with neighbouring countries should address real challenges facing communities.
He said the initiative would also strengthen people-to-people relations between Tanzania and Mozambique, particularly between communities in Cabo Delgado and southern Tanzania, which share longstanding social and historical ties.
Following the proposal, Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo and the Provincial Director of Health welcomed the initiative, expressing readiness to work with the Tanzanian ambassador and the Benjamin William Mkapa Specialist Hospital (BWMH) to take it forward.
The governor’s positive response is expected to pave the way for technical consultations between the two sides on the scope and implementation of the proposed mission.

BWMH has confirmed its readiness to provide technical and institutional support and has designated a focal person to coordinate preparations with the relevant Mozambican authorities.
The hospital also plans to send a team of specialist doctors to Cabo Delgado in November 2026 to assess the province’s health needs, available facilities and priority areas requiring intervention.
The assessment will guide preparations for the main outreach mission, proposed for February 1-14, 2027, subject to consultations and approval by the relevant authorities.
The planned medical team could provide specialised services in areas including cardiovascular medicine, nephrology, general surgery, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, haematology and urology.
However, the final range of services will depend on the findings of the November assessment and the availability of appropriate facilities and other resources.
Ambassador Hamad said the cooperation could eventually extend beyond the proposed medical outreach to include specialist training, exchange of medical professionals, telemedicine, disease screening and referrals.
