Dar City, ABC to feature in East Africa Basketball Championship

DAR ES SALAAM: TWO of Tanzania’s leading basketball teams, Dar City and Army Basketball Club (ABC), are gearing up to conquer the East Africa Basketball Championship Cup.

The six-day tournament, which brings together the top six men’s, teams from three East African Community (EAC) countries—Tanzania, Burundi and host Kenya—kicks off today and runs until December 15 this year in Nairobi, Kenya.

Basketball fans across the region are in for a treat as the teams prepare for the highly anticipated showdown.

The competition promises to be an intense display of skill, strategy and athleticism, highlighting the region’s growing basketball culture.

Haleluya Kavalambi, the Basketball Dar es Salaam (BD) Technical and Competition Director, confirmed yesterday that Tanzania will be represented by two Dar es Salaam-based teams at the event: Dar City, the 2024 National Basketball League (NBL) champions, and ABC, the runners-up.

“This tournament features some of the most talented teams in the region, making it a tough and exciting duel,” Kavalambi said.

He also named the other teams participating in the event, which include Remesha and Les Hippos from Burundi, and Kenya Ports Authority and Equity Bank Dumas from Kenya.

The tournament promises fierce competition as team’s battle for supremacy in a thrilling display of basketball talent.

Each team brings unique skills and strengths, making this championship a vital platform to develop and promote the sport across East Africa.

For Dar City, the event is particularly significant as it serves as a preparation trial for their upcoming participation in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) next year. With teams from Tanzania, Burundi, and Kenya, the championship showcases the region’s growing passion for basketball and the rising level of talent in East Africa.
