Cuban envoy highlights strong health cooperation with Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Cuban Ambassador to Tanzania, Yordenis Vera, has emphasised that strong bilateral cooperation in the health sector has enabled the continuous importation of essential medicines from Cuba to Tanzania.

Speaking over the weekend in Dar es Salaam at the opening of a training course for skin specialists, Ambassador Vera highlighted drugs for treating skin conditions, including vitiligo, as among the imported medicines.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease that causes loss of skin pigmentation, leading to white patches.

The training, conducted by renowned Cuban skin specialist Prof Ernesto Miyares Diaz, aims to enhance expertise in treating various skin diseases in Tanzania.

Ambassador Vera commended Kairuki Hospital for organising the training and acknowledged the Tanzanian Embassy in Cuba for its role in facilitating the importation of vitiligo medication.

He also praised Kairuki Hospital’s contributions to improving healthcare services for both local and international patients.

Kairuki Hospital Director General, Dr Asser Mchomvu, revealed that the first batch of vitiligo medication has already been administered to over 147 patients, who are showing positive progress.

He assured that additional supplies would arrive soon to meet growing demand. “As we celebrate 38 years of service, this is the right time to expand our reach and support people facing health challenges, including those with vitiligo,” he said.

Prof Diaz expressed his appreciation for Kairuki Hospital’s efforts, describing the vitiligo treatment offered as unique.

“I congratulate Kairuki Hospital for this initiative. Over its 38 years, the hospital has made a tremendous impact on Tanzanians,” he said.
