TODAY, as we honour the legacy of Tanzania’s first President, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the cricket legends are also celebrating the Cricket Reunion Legends Tour, embodying the spirit of unity and cultural pride that he championed.
Mwalimu Nyerere, who is fondly known as the Father of the Nation, envisioned Tanzania where diverse cultures co-exist harmoniously.
The Cricket Reunion Legends Tour highlights this vision, bringing together cricket legends from abroad and those residing in Tanzania for the common goals of love, peace and unity.
The tour is set to take place in Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo by storm from October 25 to 27. Kanu Rathod, the Group Lead of Cricket Legends of Tanzania stated to the ‘Daily News’ from Birmingham in the United Kingdom (UK) over the weekend that this year’s tour is dedicated as a tribute to Mwalimu Nyerere.
He emphasised that the event serves as a reminder of Mwalimu Nyerere’s commitment to peace and unity. Rathod noted that the tour has also invited cricket legends from Kenya, Uganda, Malawi and Zambia to reinforce the values of solidarity and unity that Nyerere instilled in the nation.
“As we reflect on Nyerere’s impact, the Reunion Legends remind us of the power of unity in fostering community and celebrating our shared heritage.
“During this Nyerere Day, let us embrace his legacy, by supporting initiatives that unite us and inspire future generations, especially in sports like cricket,” he stated.
In his message to the sporting fraternity of Tanzania, Rathod insisted: “Cricket Legends of Tanzania join President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the people of our great nation in paying the highest tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere,” he noted.
He explained that Mwalimu Nyerere was an inspiration, to both young and senior sportsmen and women.
“What inspired us was Mwalimu’s strong belief that ‘Tanzania is more than 100 tribal units that lost their freedom; it is one nation that regained it.’
He taught us the true meaning of unity,” Rathod added. Inspired by Mwalimu Nyerere’s thoughts, the Cricket Legends have decided to stage the second Reunion meet.
The event, supported by the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA), Patel Brotherhood/Patel Samaj, Upanga Club and other philanthropists, is dedicated to Mwalimu and his teachings on national unity.
Cricket takes on special significance, as this marks the first time in over 30 years that these legends have reunited in their homeland, motivated by President Samia’s leadership, which has opened the door for the Cricket Legends Tour.
The Reunion not only fosters competition among national teams and individual performances, but also creates an important platform for sports personalities to reconnect, both locally and abroad.

The inaugural Reunion in 2022 was historic, bringing together over 37 cricket legends from around the world for the Patel Brotherhood Patel Samaj (PBPS) Cricket Festival in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
This achievement is credited to the leadership of Rathod, Dinesh Vaishnav, the senior administrator of the Tanzania Veterans Cricketers’ Reunion Group and Bashir Tejani, who has successfully organised this year’s tour to mention a few.
The event promises to spread love, happiness and smiles across the nation, achievable only in a country that values peace and solidarity, making everyone feel welcome. Moreover, this initiative provides a vital platform for the TCA to collaborate with legends, gaining insights to further develop the game.
It’s no surprise that cricket continues to thrive internationally, as seen with the national senior men’s, youth under 19 and women’s side recent success.
This event is not only significant for sports development, but also serves as a platform to boost sports tourism.
The return of these former players to their homeland after so many years is largely attributed to President Samia’s strong leadership over the past three years.
