Cricket achieves major milestone in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM: CRICKET has officially won a spot in both local and international school-level championships following government’s approval, marking a watershed moment for the sport in Tanzania.

Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) Chairman, Balakrishnan Sreekumar, confirmed on Thursday evening that cricket will now be included in the Inter-Primary and Secondary School Games, the Federation of East Africa School Sports Associations (FEASSA), the All-Africa School Games (FASS) and the International School Festival (ISF).

He further highlighted the government’s recognition of cricket in prestigious international school-level tournaments, crediting this success to eight months of relentless effort.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported this journey, especially my deputy, Ashish Nagewadia and TCA CEO Hamisi Abdallah, for their unwavering commitment,” Sreekumar added. Sreekumar stressed that this milestone is a game-changer for cricket in Tanzania.

“The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed excitement over this progress, with significant support expected to follow soon, further boosting the sport’s development,” he added.

Tanzania Reunion Cricket Legends Group Leader Kanu Rathod congratulated TCA for its achievement.

Rathod said: “Sreekumar, congratulations on this incredible milestone! The legends of the game are always behind you and your dedicated management team. Special appreciation to Abdallah and Nagewadia for ideas and support they were instrumental in this success.”

UK-based Rathod commended TCA’s leadership and teamwork, calling them the keys to realising the nation’s cricketing dreams.

Similarly, Upanga Sports Club Chairman Babulal Chudasama praised the efforts of TCA and said: “Congratulations to the TCA and the entire team for this remarkable milestone. Sreekumar and your team, hats off to you for your tireless efforts. Our heartfelt blessings to all of you.”

This milestone also paves the way for a national school cricket development programme, aiming to identify and nurture young talent. A total of 56 schools have already been designated with adequate land for cricket training facilities.

Cricket is set to return to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, USA, for the first time since 1900, with a Twenty20 format for both men and women.

Tanzania’s current initiative aligns with this historic return, positioning the country on a promising path to Olympic participation.
