Cleric urges peace, justice in during General Elections

KILIMANJARO: AS the waves of the 2025 General Elections begin to pick up nationwide, Bishop Dr. Fredrick Shoo of Evangelic Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) has insisted on peace and justice during the campaign.

Bishop Shoo of the ELCT, Northern Diocese, has called on Tanzanians to ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted fairly, peacefully, and equitably.

Speaking during a service to open the new church building of the Kirua Parish in the Eastern Kilimanjaro Diocese, Bishop Shoo emphasized the importance of every Tanzanian’s active participation in election matters, particularly through voting and respecting others’ rights.

In his address, Bishop Shoo highlighted that the October 2025 elections, which will include the selection of councilors, members of parliament, and the president, represent an important time for demonstrating unity and solidarity as a nation. “As we approach the general elections for councilors, members of parliament, and the president, we, as religious leaders, urge the community to come out in large numbers and vote,” he said.

Bishop Shoo further emphasized that it is the responsibility of every citizen to ensure that the election is held in a peaceful, non-violent, and fair manner. He encouraged Tanzanians to adopt a positive attitude during the election process, stressing that every voter should have the full freedom to participate in the election without any obstacles or threats.

“Everyone should have the right to choose and be chosen, and it is crucial that this right is respected by everyone in the community,” he insisted.

Religious leaders, such as Bishop Shoo, play a key role in promoting peace and justice during the election process, especially in a time of political change and challenges within the country’s political system.

Citizens’ votes are a democratic tool that empowers them to bring about change, and it is essential to create an environment of fairness and equality for everyone who wishes to participate.

Concluding his speech, Bishop Shoo called on political leaders and the community at large to maintain peace and security during the election period, ensuring that the electoral process concludes with respect, unity, and progress for all Tanzanians.

The October 2025 General Election is expected to play a significant role in advancing and strengthening Tanzania’s democracy, where every Tanzanian will have the opportunity to elect the leaders they believe are best suited for the future of the nation.
