Chunya authorities appeal for fertilizer use education

CHUNYA, MBEYA: Chunya District authorities have appealed to the government to provide more public education on the proper use of fertilizers to help farmers increase productivity and improve soil health.
The call was made during a sensitization campaign on proper fertilizer use for the Southern Highlands Zone, led by the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Steven Nindi.
District Executive Director Mr Charles Kinyasi said that while fertilizer use among local farmers has improved over recent years, many still lack adequate knowledge of the correct application methods and types of fertilizers suitable for their soils and crops.
Dr Nindi: Why farmers’ registration in national database matters
“Many farmers are eager to use fertilizers, but some end up applying them wrongly, leading to poor yields or soil degradation. Continuous education and follow-ups are essential,” he said.
Dr Nindi, who is leading the campaign, emphasized that the government, in collaboration with stakeholders, is determined to ensure that farmers nationwide benefit from the national fertilizer strategy aimed at increasing agricultural productivity.
He urged district agricultural officers to strengthen their extension services and ensure that smallholder farmers are reached with the right information on fertilizer blending, timing, and dosage.
The campaign, which covers regions in the Southern Highlands, seeks to promote awareness on efficient fertilizer use, sustainable soil management, and access to quality inputs to support the country’s food security agenda.
