CHRAGG strengthens mediation for dispute resolution

DAR ES SALAAM: THE public has been urged to engage with legal institutions at national exhibitions events like the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair to promote accessible justice and raise awareness of citizen rights beyond the courtroom.

At the ongoing DITF, the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG), Deputy Chairperson Mohammad Hamad emphasised the value of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), especially mediation, as a quicker and more accessible way for citizens to resolve grievances.

He noted that many people are discouraged by the formal court system’s complexity and costs, making mediation a more practical path to justice.

Mr Hamad emphasised that while courts play a vital role in upholding the rule of law, alternative justice channels are essential particularly for vulnerable groups as they offer accessible, affordable and less intimidating ways to resolve disputes.

“Not everyone understands legal jargon or can afford a lawyer. Mediation has become a crucial tool to ensure people can still access justice without navigating the formal court system,” he said.

He also urged the public to take advantage of exhibitions like Sabasaba, where government bodies, legal institutions and service providers offer legal education, guidance and national updates.

“There’s a strong need for people to understand and follow up on their rights. Everyone has entitlements under the law, but also a duty to follow legal procedures and consult institutions such as the Office of the Attorney General, the Tanzania Legal Services (TLS) and other justice stakeholders,” he noted.

“These forums aren’t just about business they’re opportunities for citizens to learn about their rights, stay updated on legal frameworks and access justice beyond the courts.”

Mr Hamad concluded by calling on Tanzanians to be proactive in seeking legal information: “Let us engage, ask and learn because justice begins with knowing your rights.”
