Chinese firm eyes Dar-Isles sea crossing bridge

PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan administration has started negotiations with a Chinese firm–China Overseas Engineering Group Company (COVEC) that wants to invest in the construction of the country’s longest sea-crossing bridge from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar.

Works and Transport Deputy Minister, Godfrey Kasekenya told the National Assembly on Friday April 28, 2023 that the negotiations started on March 11, 2023 and involved experts from the Ministry of Works and Transport from Mainland Tanzania and the Ministry of Works, Communications and Transport from the Isles.

Responding to the question posed by Special Seats MP, Mwantum Dau Haji, Kasekenya said negotiations are still ongoing and the government intends to satisfy itself with the technologies used in the construction of large bridges before starting the job.

“This bridge will be built in collaboration with the private sector under PPP (Public-Private Partnership) procedure,” Kasekenya emphasized when responding to the MP question.
